After a two-week hiatus, Riverdale finally returns Thursday night with “Chapter Eight: The Outsiders.” When we last left off with the gang, tensions were pretty high, to say the least. Jughead (Cole Sprouse) had just been arrested in connection with Jason Blossom’s (Trevor Stines) murder, and not only was his dad (Skeet Ulrich) not there for support, he essentially dumped Jughead on Archie (K.J. Apa) and his father (Luke Perry), so he could take some time to get his act together.
In an exclusive clip from tonight’s episode, Jughead and Archie are helping out Mr. Andrews with his construction work. While things start out a bit awkward — understandable, given the recent revelations about their dads’ murky history — they quickly find common ground. Archie goes on and on — albeit a little insensitively, considering Jughead’s situation — about how devoted his father is, saying, “He works his ass off for me, bro, never asks for anything. Always has my back, even when I mess up.” Jughead concedes the same. “Your dad’s got my back too, more than some people,” he admits, and the tension seems to ease up.
Jason Blossom is dead, and everybody in Riverdale is suspect.
If you need a primer on the hit CW TV show based on the beloved Archie comics, let us catch you up with the necessary spoilers from past episodes: Jason’s twin, Cheryl, has admitted that she’s “guilty,” but that she didn’t actually kill him. A forensic investigation concluded that Jason was alive for an entire week after Cheryl claimed that he drowned to death. When Jason’s body was found, there was a gunshot wound to his forehead. As for the crime scene? That’s a layered situation, too. After Veronica and Betty found a gun in Ms. Grundy’s car it seemed like the mystery had been solved. Oh, and did we mention? Ms. Grundy was the teacher who was having an inappropriate relationship with Archie; the two were at that very river and heard a gun being shot the day Jason disappeared. It turns out she was living with a false identity, and left town once Archie’s dad and Betty’s mom found out about her and Archie.
If there’s anything to know about Riverdale, it’s that nothing is ever as it seems. (Cole Sprouse has even said that no character – Jughead included – should be exempt from suspicion.) Though fans have a few episodes to go before the first season ends, the cast wrapped filming a few weeks ago. What does this mean? Well, the cast likely knows how the mystery plays out.
While on set for the filming of the final episode of season one, Teen Vogue asked each of the main cast members what they think about the season’s end. Could their responses clue you into what’s next? Probably not – there are no real spoilers here. All we know is that the ending is shocking, and just when you think you have it all figured out is probably when you’re most misled.
COLE SPROUSE (JUGHEAD JONES)
“We were all pretty surprised, but the entire filming process of these 13 episodes has been the process of us pointing fingers at literally every character on the show. Considering that it had to be at least one of the characters… I wasn’t that surprised, because I had already exercised blaming everyone like some sort of witch hunter. When the truth was revealed, it was more of like an “Ohhhh, that was the theory that made the most sense.”
